Sissy Farenthold and Sue Schecter, Texas Democratic Legends

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Frances “Sissy” Farenthold is a true Texas political legend—from her service in Texas House of Representatives (then with Barbara Jordan, as the only two women in the Legislature at the time), to organizing the Texas Women’s Political Caucus, to her service as first Chair of the National Women’s Political Caucus, to her two campaigns for Texas governor, to the 1972 Democratic National Convention when her name was placed in nomination for Vice President of the United States (the first woman so nominated in the nation’s history–two women had previously received symbolic nominations–when she finished a strong second to Senator Thomas Eagleton), to her human rights work in Iraq, El Salvador, and elsewhere–Sissy has an unmatched record as a Texas advocate for progressive, humanitarian, women’s, and Democratic causes. Sissy Farenthold has been a unique treasure for Texas and for the nation.

Sue Schecter was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1991, and served two terms in the House. In 1998, Sue was elected Chair of the Harris County Democratic Party, one of the largest Party organizations in the country. Sue is now a Democratic candidate for County Clerk of Harris County. Sue also is the foremost researcher and expert on the life and accomplishments of Sissy Farenthold.
