The Legislative Recap: How much damage? What successes?

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

The Regular Session was as bizarre as any in recent memory. And unfortunately, at this writing, the Special Session is still underway. Atrocious proposals have proliferated, and too many have passed. But Democrats achieved some surprising successes. What’s the final tally? And what will it mean for the 2012 elections?

One strange development from the past Session is that under the currently proposed redistricting plan, Sen. Judith Zaffirini’s district will be extended into Travis County. Rational observers might question combining Laredo and Austin into one district, but there’s no question that Sen. Zaffirini has compiled an extraordinary recordin the Senate since she was first elected in 1987. We’re lucky to haveher agree to share her insights and expertise with the Forum.

Rep. Eddie Rodriguez also has had a super-busy Session and will share his fascinating perspective from serving on the powerful Calendars Committee.

This will be a great Forum. If you are squeamish about hearing talesof  legislative craziness, please self-medicate before attending — but don’t miss it!

Speakers: State Sen. Judith Zaffirini & State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez

Super-Spectacular Door Prizes:

1. The pelt of a coyote shot by Rick Perry while fasting and praying (not sure which one was doing which).
